What is the steam (smoke?) caused by blow-drying my hair?

I am not using any products, and I am blow-drying right after getting out of the shower. It does not smell like smoke, and does not seem to have an adverse effect (unless I press the metal of the dryer against my hair). My roommate keeps "hinting" that my hair is smoking or something.

That is steam and it is not the best for your hair, but it is not the worst thing to happen to your hair. Try backing the dryer away from your hair a little bit. If the dryer has a "cold shot" trigger, use that to help counter the steam. It is healthier for your hair than straight heat!

isn't this steam from heating the wet hair?

That would be the water from your wet hair evaporating after contact with heat. I wouldn't be worried, but just to be safe, try towel drying your hair before going straight to blow drying it. Also, if your dryer is more than 5 years old, you should consider getting a new one.
