Is there some sort of extension or plug that can save energy?

I recently found out that having your television, stereo, hair dryer...etc. plugged into the outlet will use energy even if the electronics are turned off. Is there some sort of plug I could use to regulate this or do I just need to unplug everything when not in use? I want to do my part and reduce my carbon dioxide emissions...all suggestions are appreciated!

Look at power strips. They usually have 4-6 outlet sockets controlled by a switch. Appliances that use remote controls or transformers(heavy, box-like plugs) are constantly drawing power to be ready to turn on. Connect as many appliances as possible to these power strips. When not needed, like your TV when going to bed, flick the switch off. I use power strips everywhere I can: TV, hairdryer, stereo, computer monitor, cable box, fax machine, XBox, etc. It's a very small inconvenience to reach for the switch when I need to use an appliance, compared to the energy savings. My digital answering machine has a rechargable battery backup that lasts for a week. When I'm home I turn off the answering machine, when I leave, I turn it on.

You can get filtered mains cables and plugs.

Ask Al Gore - I am sure he takes care of this in his 20 room mansion and private jet...

To minimise the power drain caused by electrical equipment you can use a plug-in security timer on a multi-plug extension - this allows you cut the power to your television, video, DVD player, stereo etc. overnight - just set the typical time you get up/go to bed as the start/end times. You can always override the timer if you stay up late.

Check that your equipment doesn't automatically switch on with the power though and watch out for power-cuts making the timer go out of sync (get a battery backup one a little more expensive.)
